APC under pressure from north-east, north-central for Senate presidency

- Politicians from northeast and north central are putting the APC under pressure over NASS leadership

- The politicians reportedly want the seat of the Senate presidency to be zoned to their geopolitical zones

- Sources also said Senate President Bukola Saraki has been making plans on who fills his position for the ninth National Assembly

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has been under pressure from politicians and lawmakers from the northeast and north central geopolitical zones to allow them decide on who becomes the Senate president for the ninth assembly.

Some very popular APC senators-elects and some former governors are also pushing for the seat and other positions to be zoned to their areas, Daily Trust reports.

Senators who spoke to Daily Trust said if the party failed to take a decision on the zoning, there will be a repeat of 2015 mistake which lead to the lack of confidence people had in Bukola Saraki when he was elected with the help of senators from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

An APC senator-elect from the northeast said the Senate president seat should be given to his area as the north central already filled the seat.

It was also gathered that the current Senate President Saraki and Speaker Dogara are also reportedly pushing to install those who will fill their seats when they are gone.

Recall that Legit.ng earlier reported that Saraki lost his senatorial seat to Ibrahim Yayaha Oloriegbe of the APC.

Sources also revealed that Saraki is allegedly using his PDP senators-elects to push for the person that will succeed him. It was learnt that Saraki may present Ekweremadu once again as the deputy president if everything with his plan goes well.

Kashim Shettima, Borno state governor and senator-elect, is also being considered for the Senate presidency, a source revealed.

“He is also intellectual, measured and widely respected for the way he managed crisis-torn Borno state in the last eight years and his leadership could bring much needed respectability to the Senate.

“As for Goje, who is going into his third term as senator, the source said party leaders tout him as a successful former governor, an effective legislator, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and a major political strategist who wrestled Gombe State away from PDP rule after eight years,” the source added.

The APC through its national publicity secretary, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, reacted to the alleged plans by PDP to support a senator from the northeast as Senate president in a move to make Ekweremadu retain his seat, saying the party would be the sole determiner of the leadership of the National Assembly.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that the national leadership of the APC will be deciding on zoning the various offices in the National Assembly sometimes next week.

It was gathered the significant positions to be zoned are Senate president, speaker, deputy Senate president, and deputy speaker.
