- According to Benue convener of the caucus, north central will feel a sense of belonging if it is allowed to produce the speaker in the next assembly

The north central caucus of the APC in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, March 19, asked the national leadership of the party to reward the zone with the position of speaker of the House.

John Dyegh, Benue convener of the caucus and lawmakers across party lines said: "With a comfortable representation from our zone, we deserve the position of the speaker as both the northwest and south west zones have been comfortably settled via the position of president and vice president.

"Zoning the position of the speaker to north central will satisfy and advance the cause of equity. We note that apart from the north west and northeast, north central zone delivered handsomely for the party in the general election and as such needs to be rewarded for the hard work and loyalty.

"The need to ensure balance and spread between and among the six geo-political zones has made it imperative to give prime consideration to the north central zone to produce the position of speaker."

According to him, it is important for people of the zone to be carried along in the hierarchy of power distribution in the country as it will in no small measure help in stabilising the polity.

"The north central will feel a sense of belonging if it’s allowed to produce the speaker in the next Assembly," he added.

Rep Solomon Maren, a PDP lawmaker, said: "It is a zonal matter and I am part of it. “What you don’t know is that a PDP lawmaker can become an aspirant."

Legit.ng previously reported that the speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara has started making frantic moves to retain his seat when the 9th National Assembly will be inaugurated in June 2019.

However, APC national leader Tinubu is reportedly interested in Lagos state producing the incoming speaker of the House of Representatives, a position Femi Gbajabiamila, the incumbent majority leader of the House of Reps, is seriously eyeing.

It was learnt that Tinubu’s efforts to ensure Gbajabiamila's emergence as the speaker in the current dispensation hit a brick wall when the lawmakers, in concert with their colleagues in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), elected Yakubu Dogara, the incumbent speaker, to lead them in 2015.
