The plaintiffs wanted the court's declaration saying the returning officer of the state lacked the powers to cancel and reject the result of any election conducted.

The parties equally prayed the court to mandate INEC and the state returning officer to discharge their duties of accepting the governorship election conducted in Tafawa Balewa local government area and declare the winner in compliance with section 179 subsection 2 of constitution.

Mohammed Kyari, returning officer, who made the declaration, said that apart from the cancellation of the result from entire Tafawa Balewa local government area because of irregularities, the outcome of the exercise in some other polling units also suffered the same fate.

According to him, “The margin between the winner and opponent is less than the total number of votes cancelled in some polling units.
