Troops kill 33 Boko Haram terrorists, recover gun trucks, others

The chief of military public information, Colonel Timothy Antigha, has said 33 Boko Haram terrorists have been neutralised by troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and large cache of weapons recovered from them.

Antigha, who made the disclosure in a statement, said Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance platforms as well as ground attack aircraft from a coalition of Cameroonian, Niger and Nigerian Air Forces intercepted and destroyed Boko Haram Terrorists in Tunbum Rego, Leadership reports.

According to the colonel, in a related development, Boko Haram assets in Arege were attacked by MNJTF troops from Sector 4 and scores of terrorists were killed in the process.

He said 33 terrorists killed in action, two gun trucks were recovered, one amoured personnel carrier destroyed, two motor cycles destroyed, one 120MM motar tube recovered, twelve AK 47 riffles recovered, two 60MM motar bombs recovered, 3736 rounds of assorted ammunition recovered, one binocular recovered and two hand grenades recovered. Meanwhile, previously reported that the Nigerian Army on Sunday, February 3, said its troops had successfully foiled an attack and killed four Boko Haram insurgents at Malumfatori community in Abadam local government area of Borno.

Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu, deputy director, Army Public Relations, Operation Lafiya Dole, made the disclosure in a statement in Maiduguri.

Nwachukwu disclosed that gallant troops of the 118 and 119 Battalions engaged the insurgents when they attempted to attack the border community on Saturday night.

He said that the troops killed four insurgents and recovered high caliber ammunition while several others fled with gunshot wounds.

He said: “On Saturday February 2, 2019; a group of Boko Haram terrorists attempted to attack the town taking advantage of darkness but met their Waterloo in an encounter with gallant troops of 118 and 119 Task Force Battalions.

“The vigilant troops engaged the terrorists with heavy fire power, killed four of the attackers while some of them escaped with gunshot wounds. The fleeing terrorists abandoned some of their weapons and equipment which were recovered by the troops."

Nwachukwu listed the recovered items to include one Light Machine Gun; one Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG 7) tubes, three RPG bombs, three RPG chargers, a belt of 200 rounds of 7.62 mm NATO ammunition, five rounds of 12.7mm ammunition and four Hand Grenades.

He noted that the gallant troops were unrelenting and in hot pursuit of the fleeing insurgents. ( -> We have updated to serve you better.
