Barcelona thrashed Lyon 5-1 on Tuesday, March 13, in a last-16 clash at Camp Nou to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
The encounter saw a decent performance from the home-side that had the likes of Clement Lenglet, Sergi Roberto and Ivan Rakitic join the squad after sitting out last weekend’s win over Rayo Vallecano in La Liga.
Barcelona had the first chance to score in the 18th minute after Lyon defender Jason Denayer fouled Luis Suarez inside the vital area and Lionel Messi stepped up to convert from the spot.
Philippe Coutinho doubled Barcelona’s lead moments after the 60th minute with a cool finish following an assist from hardworking Suarez.
Lyon were not in the contest for the most part with Barcelona dictating the pace and totally dominated their guests.
But in the 58th minute Lucas Tousart offered the French Ligue 1 campaigners a comeback hope when he pulled a goal back after Barcelona failed to clear their lines from a cross in the penalty area.
But Messi dashed any hope of a possible return with his second goal with 12 minutes remaining on the clock.
The Argentine showed class in his build up as he left defenders in his trail with ease before smashing the ball into the net.
Messi also provided Gerard Pique the assist to net Barca’s fourth goal.
Ousmane Dembele, who was a second-half sub completed the scoring in the 86th minute with a low shot inside the penalty box, thanks to another assist from Messi as Barca progressed to the quarter final round of Champions League with a 5-1 aggregate win.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Lyon were forced to a goalless draw by Barcelona on Tuesday, February 19, in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 encounter.
The French club have never beaten the Catalan giants in their history, and Lyon players wanted to break this record, but Barcelona proved an hard nut for them to crack.
