Army arrests ballot box snatchers, rescues kidnap victims in Imo, Rivers, Abia, others

Nigerian Army has arrested suspected ballot box snatchers and rescued some kidnap victims in Imo, Rivers, Abia and other states of the federation.

Legit.ng reports that the acting director Army public relations, Colonel Sagir Musa, in a statement issued on Monday, March 11, said that Nigerian Army supported the civil police to ensure a secure and peaceful conduct of the elections across the nation.

Colonel Musa said that despite pockets of crisis witnessed in few states, the election was conducted in a secure and peaceful atmosphere.

According to the Nigerian Army, security agencies made efforts to checkmate criminals, kidnappers, political thugs, ballot box snatchers from having a field day to perpetuate their selfish illegal activities, at the detriment of soldiers' lives as witnessed in Abonema and Andoni in Rivers state.

"For example, around Everyday Super Market in Owerri , Imo state, 4 impostors in military uniform (Woodland camouflage), - Chinedu Odogwu, Longinus Okelue, Oguzie Princewell and Kelvin Samalia were arrested while escorting a prominent female politicians in a political party vehicle," Musa said.

In a Facebook post, the Army wrote:

He noted that the development further reaffirmed Army's earlier warning to members of the public of the activities of some unscrupulous individuals that sponsored thugs to depend and further their selfish political objectives.

''Accordingly, 34 Brigade troops on Operation SAFE CONDUCT deployed around Osisioma junction, Abia state also arrested Allwell Enwereji and five others conveying already thumb printed ballot papers in his vehicle," he said.

He said the suspect claimed the ballot papers were specimens for campaign, adding that investigation was on to ascertain the culpability of the suspects.

According to him, troops also intercepted and arrested suspected ballot box snatchers at Airforce junction near Ngor Okpala LGA in Imo state on March 9 and in another development, troops also rescued INEC staff abducted by hoodlums at Ohafia Technical College in Anna village in Abia state on same day.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that Samuel Onoja, the coordinator of the 2019 general elections local observer groups in Enugu state, lauded the good conduct of the Nigerian Army in the southeast during the governorship and state assembly elections in the zone.
