According to Goal.com, the Liverpool forward Awoniyi, who re-joined Belgian side Mouscron on loan early in the year, was also on loan at Gent earlier in the season.
The report further revealed that the Bundesliga campaigners contacted Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp directly to inquire about Awoniyi availability of signing him for a transfer this summer.
And Liverpool are expected to demand over £10m to seal a permanent deal to the Bundesiga outfit.
Awoniyi penned a five-year new deal with the Reds last summer and has featured in over 100 senior appearances.
Liverpool are ready to accepts another loan deal for the Nigerian, however, the forthcoming withdrawal of the UK from the European Union, which is likely not favour work permits.

At the last count, he has netted six goals in seven games for the Jupiler Pro League outfit, helping Mouscron to six victories and a draw.
In addition, French and Belgium clubs that include Metz, Nice and Toulouse, Club Brugge alongside Bundesliga pair Hertha Berlin and Mainz are all queuing up for Awoniyi.
Liverpool were looking forward to see an invite for the young forward to be a part of Super Eagles squad for Seychelles and Egypt games but he was overlooked by Gernot Rohr for this month's games.
Awoniyi before now played for Nigeria at Under-23, but could not make 2016 Olympic Games in Rio alongside FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Taiwo Awoniyi has signed a new long term contract at Premier League campaigners Liverpool FC.
Awoniyi joined the Anfield based club from Imperial Soccer Academy in 2015 and prior to 2017-18 season, he was sent on loan twice at FSV Frankfurt and NEC Nijmegen.
The two stints in Germany and Netherlands ended in disappointments before his fine form in Belgium last season where he scored 10 goals for Royal Excel Mouscron.
