Real Madrid were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League at the round of 16 after suffering a 4-1 bashing from Ajax Amsterdam on Tuesday, March 5, at the Santiago Bernabéu.

The results from the two-legged affair saw the Dutch side progress into to the quarter-finals on 5-3 aggregate.

Ajax netted the opener in the seventh minute after Dusan Tadic assisted Hakim Ziyech with a pass through goal and he did not disappoint to put the away side in the lead 1-0.

In the 18th minute Ajax doubled their advantage after David Neres employed the use of a chip to beat the Real goalkeeper 2-0.

Ajax shot-stopper Andre Onana was spot on in the 23rd minute to deny Junior Vinicius from pulling one goal back from outside the box.

In the 30th minute Lucas suffered an injury and was replaced by Gareth Bale.

Five minutes later Junior Vinicius also limped off and was replaced by Marco Asensio as the Los Blancos suffered more casualties.

Despite the injuries Real Madrid came close to scoring in the 42nd minute but Bale’s strike could only hit the woodwork. At the end of the first stanza Ajax lead 2-0.

In the second half Real Madrid upped their game and Karim Benzema came close to scoring in the 60th minute, but his shot inside the box could not hit target.

The VAR was called to duty in 62nd minute to confirm Tadic’s goal. And after consulting the piece of technology the referee awarded Ajax’s third goal as the ball during the build-up did not go out of play.

In the 70th minute Asensio reduced the deficit for Real Madrid from 20-yard out to keep scores at 3-1. But two minutes later, Lasse Schoene became the fourth different goalscorer for Ajax when he restored the Dutch side’s two-goal lead.

In the last ten minutes, Real Madrid pushed more players to see if more goals will come their way, but that did not happen. And were reduced to 10 men late on into the contest with Nacho Fernandez picking up a second yellow.

At the blast of the final whistle the scoreboard read Real Madrid 1 - 4 Ajax as the away side earned a 5-3 aggregate win to send the Champions League defending champions crashing out of the competition.

Earlier, reported that Real Madrid secured slim victory over Dutch League side Ajax Amsterdam in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 encounter at Johan Cruijff Arena.

The hosts were the better side in most part of the game but the result at the end of the day proved otherwise.

Los Blancos broke the deadlock in the 60th minute through Frenchman Karim Benzema after connecting with Vinicius Junior who overcame two players before threading the pass that to the goal. ( -> We have updated to serve you better.
