Retro: Photos of 5 Nigerian presidents and their first ladies

Nigeria has been led by a few great men, and at the side of these extraordinary men who gained the trust of Nigerians are great women who stood by them through campaign runs, political strife, high and low points in the country.

These presidents were supported by their beautiful wives who also served as first ladies by the side of their husbands.

On Saturday, February 23, Nigerians decided who would lead the country for the next four years. President Muhammadu Buhari was re-elected by Nigerians.

In honour of the families that have served Nigeria as the first family, Legit.ng has compiled adorable photos of Nigerian presidents and their first ladies. The photos showed the first families as their ordinary selves without the mantle of leadership.

1) General Sani and Maryam Abacha:

Sani Abacha was an officer in the Nigerian Army who later served as a military head of state, the de facto president of Nigeria, from 1993 to 1998. He is also the first Nigerian soldier to attain the rank of a full star General without skipping a single rank. He was married to Maryam Abacha.

2) Olusegun and Stella Obasanjo:

Olusegun Obasanjo was also a former Nigerian Army general who was president of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007. Obasanjo served Nigeria twice, as a military head of state and as a civilian president. He was married to Stella Obasanjo who supported him every step of the way.

3) Late Umaru and Turai Yar'Adua:

Late Umaru Musa Yar'Adua became Nigeria's 13th president on May 29, 2007. He was governor of Katsina state from May 29, 1999, to May 28, 2007. He died on May 5, 2010, at the Aso Villa. He was married to Turai Yar'Adua who supported him every step of the way.

4) Goodluck and Patience Jonathan:

Goodluck Ebele Jonathan served as Nigeria's president from 2010 to 2015. He was also the vice president of Nigeria from 2007 to 2010 while Yar'Adua was in office. He is married to Patience Jonathan who supported him every step of the way.

5) President Muhammadu and Aisha Buhari:

Muhammadu Buhari is the current president of Nigeria. He became president in 2015, and would continue as president for another four years after the 2019 election.

Buhari is also a retired major general in the Nigerian Army. He also served as head of state from December 31, 1983 to August 27, 1985, after taking over power in a military coup d'état. He is married to Aisha who supports him every step of the way.
