- Atiku's son-in-law was earlier released by the commission
Emerging reports have claimed that Tanimu Turaki, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Channels TV reports that a source in the anti-graft agency confirmed the development on Tuesday, March 5.
Turaki, a former minister and the present deputy director general of the PDP campaign organisation, was said to have been arrested on Monday, March 4.
PDP had earlier claimed that Turaki was arrested and detained after being invited by the EFCC to endorse a bail document for Babalele Abdullahi, a son-in-law to the presidential candidate for the party, Atiku Abubakar.
The party said that the detention of its chieftain was part of the alleged plot by the federal government and the APC to “use state apparatus of power” to intimidate its leaders.
Turaki was one of the aspirants who lost the PDP’s presidential ticket to Atiku Abubakar at the party’s Port Harcourt convention. He is a former minister of special duties.
A statement released by the director of media and publicity, PDP presidential campaign organisation, Kola Ologbondiyan, read: “Since the people’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and the PDP expressed our unwavering determination to reclaim our victory at the tribunal, being armed with overwhelming evidence, our leaders have been subjected to escalated harassments, constant threats, blackmails, cajoling and contrivances by the APC to drop our legal option.
“The PDP, however, states in clear terms that the APC and the Buhari presidency are fighting a lost battle as no amount of harassment and threats will ever make the party to buckle in its determination to take back the mandate, in line with the wishes and aspirations of Nigerians.
“Nigerians are resolute on this struggle to reclaim the mandate freely given to Atiku Abubakar at the polls and the PDP will pursue this decision to its logical end and secure justice for the Nigerian people."
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that a son-in-law to the presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar, has been released by the EFCC.
Babalele Abdullahi was released after the anti-graft agency invited Turaki, a senior lawyer who is leading the defense team of Atiku to sign a bail document for him (Abdullahi).
