Breaking: Dino Melaye arraigned days after electoral victory

- Senator Dino Melaye is arraigned at an FCT high court in the Apo area of Abuja

- Melaye is facing a six-count charge of attempting to take his own life and damaging police property

- Melaye was recently granted bail by a court just before he won a re-election bid into the Senate

Just days after his victory at the election, Senator Dino Melaye, was on Tuesday, March 5, arraigned by the police at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) high court, Apo area of Abuja on a six-count charge, part of which was attempting to take his own life.

In another part of the charges, Senator Melaye was accused of attempting to escape from custody.

Melaye, who recently won another opportunity to represents Kogi West senatorial district, was alleged to have damaged police property.

Vanguard reports that the Melaye denied committing the offences as stated in the charges.

The report quoted that Justice Sylvanus Oriji explained that he had knowledge that the court had granted bail to the defendant being Melaye during his arraignment before him on July 25, 2018, on the same charges.

It was reported that the prosecuting counsel, Alex Izinyon (SAN), told the court that Melaye committed the alleged offences on April 24, adding that the senator forced his way out of the police vehicle conveying him to Lokoja in an attempt to escape.

Izinyon alleged that Melaye held a substance in his hand and threatened to drink it to kill himself and put the police in trouble.

The lawyer claimed that the offences were contrary the provisions of sections 148,153,173,231, 326 and 327 of the penal code.

However, the counsel to the defendant, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) was not in court.

The case was adjourned until April 5, for hearing.

Legit.ng earlier reported how Dino Melaye was arrested days after the police laid siege to his Abuja home. He was later transferred to the Department of State Services (DSS).

The Nigeria Police Force later explained that Senator Dino Melaye was moved from the police clinic to the medical facility of the DSS as part of preliminary arrangements for his coming trial in Lokoja, Kogi state.

The Nation reports that police spokesman, Moshood Jimoh, claimed that Senator Melaye was taken by policemen to the medical facilities of the DSS and not their cell or detention facilities.

Jimoh said: “On the 9th of January, 2019 we got a High Court Remand Warrant to keep him in police custody for fourteen days.

It also reported that the DSS denied that its operatives abducted Melaye as alleged in some media.

A statement by the public relations officer of the service, Peter Afunanya, said that the police brought Dino to its medical facility.
