We funded higher institutions in 4 years with N727bn - FG

- The federal government has revealed how much it spent on tertiary institutions in Nigeria between 2015 and 2018

- The minister of education, Adamu Adamu, said that not less than N727,225,862,128.86 were used for various projects in schools

- Adamu also revealed that allocations were also made to some schools from all geo-political zones

The federal government has said that between 2015 and 2018, it released not less than N727,225,862,128.86 for infrastructure development in tertiary institutions through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Daily Trust reports.

The minister of education, Adamu Adamu, said that the funds were spent on physical infrastructure, project maintenance, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) support, entrepreneurship, library development and special high impact projects, academic staff training and development, and research, among others.

Adamu further said that TETFund intervention was away from other sources of funding tertiary education like needs assessment and internally generated funds.

Allocations were also made to some schools from all geo-political zones alongside the Nigerian Army University, Biu, in Borno.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had said it was consulting with its members about ending an ongoing industrial action after the federal government informed the union that it had released N163 billion to universities from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

Senator Chris Ngige, the minister of labour and employment, told newsmen after a closed door reconciliatory meeting with leaders of ASUU on Monday, January 21, in Abuja, that most of the issues with the union had been resolved.
