The Buhari Youth Organisation (BYO), Lagos State chapter on Wednesday, February 27, said President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election is a call for more achievements and he cannot afford to fail the people.
The group said this in a statement jointly signed by Abdulwaheed Odunuga and Babajide Bakare, the Lagos state coordinator and publicity secretary of the group.
The group said that Buhari’s re-election for a second term was a testament to his positive stride in nation-building.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was on Wednesday declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), having polled 15,191,847 votes, winning in 19 states.
Buhari defeated 71 other candidates including his closest contender, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 11, 255,978 votes and won 17 states and the FCT to emerge second.
“The Buhari Youth Organisation, Lagos chapter join millions of Nigerians and the international community in felicitating with the newly re-elected president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari on his victory at the polls in the just concluded presidential elections.
“This victory at the polls is an additional call and demand on the Buhari presidency that there is still a lot to be done in achieving the great Nigeria of our dream.
“Nigerians have placed their trust and hope in him to lead them in the next four years, and he cannot afford to fail.
“The heavy investment in infrastructure, roads, rails and works must continue, the fight against corruption must be more entrenched.
“The fight against insurgency and security of lives and property must be given more focus and our electoral system and process must be reviewed to become more efficient,’’ the group said.
The group described Buhari’s re-election as “a resounding victory’’ and a referendum on honesty as aptly described by “The New York Times’’.
It said the re-election was a victory for the people, by the people and for the people, as they made an obvious choice between a conservative reformer and an allegedly corrupt capitalist.
“This victory is a testament to the positive stride of the APC administration at rebuilding the fabrics of the nation through heavy investment in infrastructure, curbing of corruption and improving the security architecture of life and properties across the nation.’’
According to the group, the newly elected president should be magnanimous in victory in the spirit of sportsmanship as there is no victor or vanquish.
The youth leaders urged the President to use the opportunity of his re-election to bridge the wide gap of ethnic and religious intolerance that had ensued in the course of the electoral process.
“Nigeria must move forward after this election, and we must not allow any hate or harm done in the process to cause any animosity.
“We also urge the opposition to accept the defeat in good spirit and should not cause any tension in the nation as a fall out of the election.
“Lessons should be learnt from the dynamics of this electoral process and should be applied in forthcoming elections.
“The legal and constitutional options should be sought to seek any redress over issues arising from the elections,’’ they added.
The group also commended the electoral body and security agencies for standing firm in the discharge of their duties.
They added that efforts must be intensified toward ensuring that the nation records an increase in voters’ turnout across the nation in upcoming elections.
