Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has been punished by his club following his refusal to be substituted in the Carabao Cup final defeat by Manchester City.

Kepa was fined a week's wages for defying direct instructions from the dugout to get replaced by Willy Caballero.

"Although there was a misunderstanding, on reflection, I made a big mistake with how I handled the situation," Kepa submitted in a Chelsea statement.

Sarri was furious when Kepa refused to leave the field and stormed down the tunnel before later emerging.

"I wanted to take the time today to apologise fully and in person to the coach, to Willy, my teammates and to the club.

"I have done this and now I want to offer the same apology to the fans. I will learn from this episode and will accept any punishment or discipline the club decided is appropriate," Kepa said.

And according to BBC (UK), Sarri on his part, accepted his keeper's apology after having a "nice conversation" with the former Athletico Bilbao 24-year-old, club record KSh 9.3 billion signing.

"He has apologized to me, his team-mates and the club. It is up to the club if they want to discipline him according to the club rules, but for this matter is now closed," the Chelsea boss conclusively said.

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how Chelsea gaffer Maurizio Sarri explained that Kepa Arrizabalaga's refusal to be subbed against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final was a big misunderstanding.

After 120 minutes of football at the Wembley Stadium, Chelsea and Manchester City failed to find the back of the net before the referee called for penalties.

But towards the end of the extra time, Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri ordered that goalkeeper Kepa should be subbed with Willy Caballero, but the Spaniard refused to leave the pitch.
