Explain when soldiers can shoot - PDP chieftain asks Buhari

Chief Newuwumi Omolubi, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, has asked for clarification on when the military can shoot in the case of electoral misconduct.

He made the request for the clarification at a media conference on Friday, February 22, saying the need for explanation is necessary so that other electorate’s lives are not endangered in the process, The Nation reports.

The PDP chieftain who a member of the campaign committee of the PDP in Warri north council area of Delta state said President Muhammadu Buhari’s statement on ballot snatching is very dangerous to human lives during the forthcoming electoral exercise.

He said: “In between the four communities in my ward, there is a military houseboat. Now if the people who most times help the INEC people to convey their materials, at which stage will Buhari want the soldier to shoot.

“The communities are the ones that help the INEC staff to move these materials because of the distance and the difficult terrain, so at which stage does it become dangerous for my people.

“I am seeking this clarification to guide my people to know when to stop their services to the ad hoc staff of INEC to avoid killing of innocent civilians whose main concern is to help INEC smooth operation”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Progressive Yoruba Youths (PYY) reportedly supported President Muhammadu Buhari’s strict measures put in place against Nigerians plotting to jeopardise the forthcoming elections by snatching ballot boxes.

Buhari had on Monday, February 18 said anyone caught in the act of ballot box snatching, will do so at the cost of their lives.

"Anybody who decides to snatch ballot boxes or lead thugs to disturb, it may be that [this will be] the last unlawful action you will take," Buhari had said.
