As the 2019 general elections draw nearer, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has vowed to sell the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to Nigerians if elected as president.
Reports by Daily Trust claimed that Atiku made this known in Kaduna state while condemning an allegation levelled against him that he wanted to sell the NNPC to himself and his friends.
Reacting to the allegation, the PDP presidential candidate said: "They keep saying ‘Atiku wants to sell NNPC to himself and his friends. That is a lie!. They don’t want us to sell NNPC but we will sell it. We will sell it to you. Will you buy?"

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the chief executive officer of Financial Derivatives, Bismarck Rewane spoke about Atiku Abubakar's plan to sell NNPC if elected as Nigeria's next president in 2019 election.
A policy document released by the PDP presidential candidate was said to have noted that he was seeking partial privatisation of the NNPC, regarded as Nigeria’s cash cow.

Reacting to the specific idea of privatising the NNPC, the financial analyst, said the idea is a noble one, but Atiku must tell Nigerians who he plans to sell to, else he may plunge the country into chronic capitalism.
In related development, Nigerian workers have been urged by President Buhari to reject sale of the nation’s refineries and privatisation of the NNPC with their votes in the coming general elections.
