African-American movie star, Jussie Smollett has been arrested in Chicago. This was done shortly after he was charged with filing a false police report.
The actor claimed to be a victim of a homophobic and racist attack in Chicago in January 2019.
The 36-year-old claimed that he was attacked by two masked men who hurled racial slurs at him and also put a noose around his neck as they poured bleach on him.
However, there have been doubts about his claims and he has been arrested. Smollett faces up to three years in prison or probation if found guilty.
According to the Chicago Police Department spokesperson, Anthony Guglielmi, Smollett is in the custody of detectives.
After the Empire star was charged, his lawyers released a statement revealing that Smollett "enjoys the presumption of innocence, particularly when there has been an investigation like this one where information, both true and false, has been repeatedly leaked", NBC News reports.
Two Nigerian brothers were initially arrested in connection to the case but they have since been released without charge. It was, however, discovered that the brothers had bought the rope used in the alleged attack.
Smollett had raised a storm on social media after news of the alleged attack was publicised. Many people trooped to send him goodwill messages and also preach against hate crimes.
Among his sympathisers was Nollywood actress, Tonto Dikeh. The movie star preached that she is aware of the bible's stance on homosexuality but people should not be attacked for loving differently.
