Presidency denies prior knowledge of 2019 election postponement by INEC

- The presidency has said that President Buhari did not have prior knowledge of the INEC decision to postpone the 2019 general elections till Saturday, February 23

- Buhari's media aide Garba Shehu told newsmen gathered at the president's home in Daura that he was shocked to hear it like everyone else

- President Buhari later departed Daura for Abuja to receive proper briefing on why the elections were posted

The presidency has denied that President Muhammadu Buhari had any prior knowledge of the postponement of the 2019 general elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Nation reports that presidency made the denial through Buhari's media aide Garba Shehu just before he departed his home in Daura, Katsina state for the seat of power Abuja.

Garba, the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity told newsmen in front of Buhari’s house in Daura that his principal was as shocked as everyone else to hear INEC's decision which was reached in the early hours of Saturday, February 16.

He said: ’’The President told all of us on Friday evening that we shall be at the polling unit for the election, only to wake up this morning about the postponement. He was shocked by the development and has left for Abuja to hear from the INEC Chairman and the convened stakeholders meeting before issuing a statement to the Media."

President Buhari has since returned to Abuja after the INEC postponed today's Presidential and National Assembly elections due to logistic issues.

Legit.ng also reported that President Buhari has issued an official statement on the postponement.

In the statement made available to the media on Saturday, President Buhari expressed disappointment over the decision of the electoral umpire to postpone the elections.

"I am deeply disappointed that despite the long notice given and our preparations both locally and internationally, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) postponed the Presidential and National Assembly elections within hours of its commencement," the Nigerian leader said.
