President Muhammadu Buhari has returned to Abuja after Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) postponed today's Presidential and National Assembly elections due to logistic issues.
The president left his home town in Daura, Katsina state and returned to the presidential villa in Abuja Saturday morning to await briefing by the chairman of INEC, Mahmood Yakubu.
President Buhari's spokesperson, Garba Shehu, announced this while speaking to journalists on TVC, Saturday morning.
The chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu announced the postponement of the elections around 2.45 am on Saturday, February 16, after he held an emergency meeting with security officials, election observers and other stakeholders.
Yakubu said proceeding with the election as scheduled is no longer feasible and as result of this, the election was postponed by a week.
President Buhari, who reacted to the postponement Saturday morning, said he was deeply disappointed that despite the long notice given and and all preparations both locally and internationally, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) postponed the Presidential and National Assembly elections within hours of its commencement.
The president said many Nigerians have traveled to various locations to exercise their right to vote, and international observers are gathered.
The president urged INEC to ensure not only that materials already distributed are safe and do not get into wrong hands, but that everything is done to avoid the lapses that resulted in this postponement, and ensure a free and fair election on the rescheduled dates.

Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, alleged that the postponement of the general election by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is “obviously a case of the hand of Esau but the voice of Jacob.”
Atiku blamed the postponement of the elections on the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, saying the government had "more than enough time and money to prepare".
