- NNPC has said there is a possibility that gas could be discovered in their drilling activities in Bauchi as shown by their analysis
- The petroleum corporation also said there is a renewed drive to explore more inland basins for more possibilities
- The corporation said the need to drill places that had been explored by international companies was to keep up the country's production reserves
Maikanti Baru, the group managing director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has said that there is a possibility of gas in their analysis of Bauchi/Gombe oil search.
The managing director made this known while speaking with newsmen during the drilling activities in the Kolmani River II Oil Well in Bauchi State, Daily Trust reports.
When asked why the NNPC is drilling for oil in the basin decades after many international companies had done son in the 1990s, Baru said the activity is needful so the country can keep up its oil production.
The director also said the exploration of inland basin is a fulfillment of President Buhari's promise that basins will be explored for more drilling possibilities when asked if that’s one of the purposes of the activity.
He said: “Today is promise delivered, for him to see that we have fully returned to the frontier exploration of the inland basin and we are very hopeful that with the exploration that we are embarking upon this particular well would be a test case on the Kolmani prospects.
"We have six prospects that we have identified in the Kolmani River Basin and after this is successful we are going to the next location, and next. If you look just behind this rig, across the river, you will see that we have called in the Nigerian Army Engineers to build a bridge for us which would take us to our next location; the Kolmani River III, which is just 1.7 to 2.0 kilometres from here.”
The NNPC director made an interesting revelation on the possibility of the discovery of gas in the Gombe/Bauchi basins if their activities are successful.
He revealed: “If we hit success what people are going to see is development. This is because at the moment, most of the analyses are indicating the possibility of having gas.
“So if it is going to be gas, we are going to have activities in terms of establishing power plants; we are going to have activities in terms of establishing fertilizer plants; and also have activities relating to possibly other industries like petrochemicals. It is going to be great.
“This place is going to be transformed industrially. We are very much looking forward to that.”
Recall that Legit.ng previously reported that the NNPC earlier cautioned Nigerians against heightened expectation of crude oil discovery in some states in the northern part of the country.
It was also reported that Baru, while speaking at the Presidential Spud-in (drilling) of Kolmani River II Well, in Barambu community in Alkaeri local government area, between Bauchi and Gombe states issued a caveat on oil exploration in the area.
Baru warned that the expectations of an early find of crude oil and gas in the north might not be as immediate as expected by all.
