- Governor Amosun of Ogun has reacted to the thug sponsoring claim following the pandemonium that broke up during APC rally in the state
- The governor denied the allegation levelled against him as contained in a statement by APC's national publicity secretary, Issa-Onilu
- Amosun, in a statement, dared APC over threat by the party to punish him after the general elections
Following the pandemonium that almost ruined the All Progressive Congress presidential campaign in Ogun state on Monday, February 10, Governor Ibikunle Amosun has come out with an explanation, denying sponsoring thugs as alleged by APC.
Reacting to the allegation by APC's national publicity secretary, Lanre- Issa-Onilu, that he was behind the rancour that almost boomeranged into a big fracas during the rally, the Ogun governor, in a statement by his special adviser on information and strategy, Rotimi Durojaiye, denied the allegation.
Amosun, who maintained that his relation with President Muhammadu Buhari is a father-son one, said he was surprised by the ''ridiculous'' allegation, considering the fact that he was just a host of the reception, Tribune reports.
He said: "It is clearly ridiculous that someone will author the statement purportedly signed by Mr Lanre Issa – Onilu. As the governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun was not only the host at the rally, he organised the grand reception for Mr president.
“The relationship between President Buhari and Governor Amosun is well known. It is therefore unthinkable that someone will allege that Governor Amosun will organise thugs against the president.
"The statement by Mr Onilu is another confirmation of the personification of the APC by Comrade Oshimhole who is using the party to ventilate his personal grouse against Governor Amosun.
"It is however becoming clear to every discerning mind that the injustice meted out to the overwhelming majority of members of the APC in Ogun state by Comrade Oshiomhole and his cohorts cannot stand."
Commenting on the threat by Issa-Onilu that APC would punish him for instigating violence against the party during the rally, Governor Amosun said he was not bothered by the subtle threat, adding that APC's alleged compromise during its primaries had made the party loss its visibility in the state.
He said: "The position of the governor is that rather than dissipate their energy on those they will deal with after election, Comrade Oshiomole and his co-travellers should be remorseful that their anti-democratic conduct has denied the APC scores of legislative seats and a number of executive positions across the country even before the elections.
"They do not need to wait until after the election, they should throw-in the towel now for undermining the chances of the party they have cornered for their selfish ends."
