Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loera, the notorious Mexican drug lord, who made wealth as the headman of famous Sinaloa cartel for years has been found guilty of a 10-count charge brought against him by the United States (US) on Tuesday, February 12.

El Chapo, who is now 61, appeared unmoved and his reactions unreadable when the charges against him were read by the US District Judge Brian Cogan.

In reaction to how the case went, a US attorney for eastern district of New York, Richard Donoghue said: “The case was a victory for the people of America and Mexico, who had lost their loved ones in drug wars."

Forbes had once listed El Chapo at an estimated value of $1 billion, the money he made from exporting weights of cocaine to the US and manufacturing of other illegal drugs.

The infamous drug kingpin had once escaped jail in 2001 with the aid of a laundry cart, and would later carry out another escape in 2015 through the use of dark tunnels, only to be recaptured a year later in 2016.

One of El Chapo's defense lawyers, Jeffrey Lichtman, said the case was one that had much evidence and many witnesses who cooperated.

In his words: “I’ve never faced a case with so many cooperating witnesses and so much evidence.”
