Just in: Any officer seen with VIP on election day will be arrested - Police IG

- Mohammed Adamu has called on police officers not to be with VIPs on election day

- The inspector-general of police said any officer caught will be arrested

- According to Adamu, everyone will get a level playing ground for the election

The acting Inspector general of police, Mohammed Adamu, has warned that any officer seen with any VIP on election day will be arrested.

Vanguard reports that the police chief gave this warning at the public presentation of a partnership between Transition Monitoring Group, the Human and Environmental Development Agenda, Police Service Commission, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.

Adamu said they had heard about fake police uniforms being brought into the country but said the police will be alert.

He said any officer whether in uniform or not found with VIPs on the election day will be arrested.

He said: “Everyone has a civic responsibility in ensuring peaceful and credible elections. Election materials must be secured. Electoral officials, domestic and foreign observers must be protected. “The Independent National Electoral Commission has rolled out the ways stakeholders should conduct themselves. On our part, we assure the nation that all electoral materials will be secured and the electorate will be allowed to cast their votes without monetisation.

“No police officer is allowed to move around with any VIP on Election Day. Anyone, who does so in uniform or mufti will be arrested.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Monday, February 11 commenced the airlift of electoral materials for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) across the country for the conduct of the 2019 general elections.

Legit.ng gathered that the airlift exercise includes day and night missions, during which both sensitive and non-sensitive electoral materials were conveyed in batches, with NAF C-130 Hercules aircraft from the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja to various airports across the country.

According to a statement by NAF spokesman, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, the materials were duly delivered by the C-130H aircraft crew to teams of INEC and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) officials together with security personnel waiting at the various airports.
