Elections: Kogi government closes schools for 2 mid-term breaks
- Schools in Kogi state will be going on 2 mid-term breaks in preparation for the coming general elections
- The academic curriculum for secondary schools in the state has been reviewed so the break can match the dates for the elections
- Among many reasons, the schools are going on break is that elections will be held in some of them
The Kogi state government on Monday, February 11, announced that all schools in the state would temporarily close down for the February 16 and March 2, general elections.
The government directed school administrators to comply with the two mid-term breaks in the reviewed 2018/2019 academic calendar in the state, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Eric Aina, the permanent secretary of Kogi state Ministry of Education, Science & Technology, announced this in a statement in Lokoja, on behalf of the commissioner for education, Rosemary Osikoya.
Aina said in the statement that the ministry had reviewed the 2018/2019 academic calendar to ensure that mid-term break for schools across the state coincided with the general elections.

In her words: “In view of the forth coming general elections, the state Ministry of Education has approved two `half-term breaks’ to cover both the presidential and gubernatorial elections for all educational institutions in the state. This is in view of the fact that elections are held in some schools.
“I am directed to request you to close all schools for mid-term break as follows:
“First term break from February 13 to 15, 2019; classes are to resume on February 18, and boarders are to return on the evening of February 17.
“Second `half-term break’ from February 28 to March 1; classes are to resume on March 4.
“Boarders are to return to school on the evening of March 3, 2019."

He, therefore, called on all head teachers, principals, heads of schools and institutions, in both private and public schools in the state, to comply with the directive.
He also enjoined all parents and guardians in the state to take note of the break periods.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the federal government said that Nigeria will be closing its borders during the forthcoming 2019 general elections.
The disclosure was made in Abuja on Friday February 8, by the minister of interior, Lieutenant General Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd), who said the closure is to guarantee more security.
