Grammys 2019: 6 things about the Soweto Gospel Choir that beat Seun Kuti

The Soweto Gospel Choir is currently popping after the group won an award at the 2019 Grammy Awards. The group won in the category of the Best World Music Album at the 61st edition.

In 2018, five groups had been nominated for the category. had reported that Afrobeat artist Seun Kuti and his Egypt 80 were nominated for the category alongside other groups. South Africa's Soweto Gospel Choir, Bombino from Niger, Fatoumata Diawara from Mali and Soviet's Yiddish Glory.

On Sunday, February 10, the Grammy Awards took place and the Soweto Gospel Choir was recognised for their hard work with the award. Despite the fact that they won against Nigeria's Seun Kuti, we are still happy for them.

1) Background:

The group was formed in Soweto, South Africa, by two choir directors, David Mulovhedzi and Beverly Bryer, in 2002. The group has over 30 members who are classified as the most talented choristers from churches across Soweto.

2) Performance:

The group performs songs in English and five of the 11 languages spoken in South Africa. They have performed alongside many stars across the world, including Beyonce. The group performs in bright costumes, blending African gospel, Negro spirituals, reggae and American popular music.

3) Albums and stage performances:

They performed at the 46664 concerts for Nelson Mandela. They opened the FIFA concert in Soweto in 2010. They were also at the 75th and 80th birthday celebrations for the choir's patron, Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

The group released their first album Voices of Heaven in June, 2005. They have also released four award-winning albums, Blessed in 2005, African Spirit in 2006, Grace in 2010, and Freedom in 2018.

4) Movie recognition:

The group was featured on the Peter Gabriel/Thomas Newman's song Down to Earth. The song was written for Pixar's 2008 film WALL-E.

5) Grammy wins:

In 2007 and 2008, the group won the award for the Best Traditional World Music Album category. This year, they won the Best World Music Album category.

6) Grammy nominations:

Soweto Gospel Choir has been nominated five times for the prestigious award.
