- Governor Simon Lalong's campaign organisation mocks PDP's Jeremiah Useni for refusing to take part in a governorship debate
- The campaign organisation claims Useni avoided the debate because he is old, impaired and has disdain for public scrutiny
- The head of media and publicity committee of the PDP in the state, Hon Yiljap Abraham, says Useni's absence was due to unforeseen circumstances
The re-election campaign council of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau state in favour of Governor Simon Lalong, has mocked the flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Jeremiah Useni, for shunning a debate.
The campaign organisation alleged that Useni refusal to attend the 2019 governorship debate was because he knows he is old, impaired and has disdain for public scrutiny.
Jeremiah, a retired military officer, is also a senator representing a part of Plateau state at the National Assembly.
Daily Sun reports that a statement issued in Jos on Wednesday, February 6, by the campaign council and signed by Jonathan Ishaku, Alex Kwapnoe, Ayuba Pam and Daniel Dung Dalyop, asked Useni to tell Nigerians why he refused to take part in the debate.
“We sympathize with the PDP and its supporters even though in some quarters many are questioning the candidate’s inability to show up for the debate; was it just for the challenges of advanced age and impaired health or the fear of being subjected to public scrutiny?
“How such frailty and disdain for public scrutiny portend to good governance in the unlikely circumstances that a candidate with such unpredictable disposition gets into office?
“We pray for the PDP to overcome its difficulties in good time so that the contest will be properly joined; only this will make APC's inevitable victory at the polls sweeter.
“We regret the inability of the candidate of the PDP to show up to take the auspicious opportunity to outlay his party’s programmes to the good people of the state as the other contestants did.
“A political party like PDP would avail itself the mechanism of an open forum for robust Debate on issue of public interest,” the organisation said.
The organisation commended Governor Lalong for participating in the debate and reportedly coming out strong.
The report, however, said Useni could not attend the debate due to unforeseen circumstances.

“We regret that the PDP Plateau state governorship flag-bearer, Senator JT Useni, is unable to attend and participate in today’s gubernatorial debate put up by the Plateau debate group. This is owing to unforeseen developments,” the statement said.
Yiljap also complained about how the governor was running the state and allegedly muzzling the mass media.
