Former Liberian president Johnson-Sirleaf arrives Abuja for 2019 elections

- Ahead of the 2019 general elections, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, former president of Liberia, arrived Abuja in official capacity

- Johnson-Sirleaf who arrived the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Tuesday, February 5, was received by the ECOWAS delegation led by vice president, Finda M. Koroma

- According to the former president of Liberia, she expects to meet with political leaders and join Nigerians to ensure that the process is peaceful and successful

Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, former president of Liberia, on Tuesday, February 5, arrived in Abuja as the head of ECOWAS observer mission in Nigeria ahead of the 2019 general elections.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports she was received by the vice president of the ECOWAS commission, Finda Koroma, members of the commission and some representatives of the ECOWAS Parliament.

According to Johnson-Sirleaf, she expects to meet with political leaders and join Nigerians to ensure that the process is peaceful and successful.

The former Liberian president said she would share the findings of earlier missions and consult with those who were already on ground to observe the elections.

With less than two weeks to the 2019 general elections, the international community has deployed various missions to observe the electoral process closely.

The former Liberian president also promised to help ensure that the election process in Nigeria is peaceful and successful.

Sirleaf made the promise when she was received by the vice president of ECOWAS Commission, Finda Koroma, at the Presidential Wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. She was also received by other members of the commission and some representatives of the ECOWAS Parliament.

“I hope to meet with political leaders, I want to be able to understand the role I have to play to make sure that I am well prepared to carry out the function.

“I am pleased that it is an ECOWAS assignment and I will be working with them (ECOWAS Commission) and they will guide me and I just expect that I will join all Nigerians to make sure that this whole process is so peaceful and successful. That is the purpose of my mission.”

The former Liberian president also said she would share in the findings of earlier missions and consult with those who had been on ground.

She said: “I cannot make a statement till I have had an opportunity to be able to share in the findings of earlier missions, to consult with those who have been on ground.

“At a later date, the ECOWAS Observer Mission will be fully engaged, will carry out its functions and speak when it is time to speak."

The electoral assistance to member states has been a vital part of the ECOWAS approach to promote democracy, human rights and the rule of law in the sub-region.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the federal government welcomed the statements from the United States and the United Kingdom demanding credible and peaceful election in Nigeria and threatening punitive measures against election riggers and perpetrators of electoral violence.

In a statement issued in Ilorin on Friday, January 24, the minister of information and culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the federal government is delighted that the statements came after it alerted the nation, “to the machinations of some opposition elements who are working to scuttle the 2019 polls through widespread violence.”
