We are only seeking constitutional 2nd term; not 3rd like some people - Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, February 5, threw shade at former president Olusegun Obasanjo saying that he is only seeking a second term in office and not a third term as “some people” did.

President Buhari, addressing Ondo state Council of Obas in Akure, said: “We have just finished one term and are seeking a second one. After that, the constitution doesn’t permit an more.

“There are some who tried looking for more but they did not succeed. We should learn from their mistakes.”

The president’s statement was made available on Twitter by Tolu Ogunlesi, who oversees digital communications in the presidency.

Ex-president Obasanjo was embroiled in a controversy regarding his third term bid popularly known as “Third Term Agenda”; an alleged plan to modify the constitution so he could serve a third, four-year term as president.

The third term agenda led to a political media uproar in Nigeria and the bill was not ratified by the National Assembly.

Obasanjo eventually left office after the April 2007 general election.

Obasanjo had subsequently denied the controversial third term agenda. He said that it was the National Assembly that included tenure elongation amongst the other clauses of the Constitution of Nigeria that were to be amended.

“I never toyed with the idea of a third term,” Obasanjo told Channels TV in 2012.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Femi Adesina, a presidential spokesperson, insisted that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, will not win the presidential election even if witches and wizards endorse him.

The presidential aide made the statement shortly after reports emerged that Atiku had secured an endorsement from five socio-cultural groups in the country as well as another endorsement from a sect called the Association of White Witches in Nigeria (AWWN), which accorded support to the PDP presidential candidate after several meetings which they claimed to have had on Obudu mountain and Zuma rock.

Adesina who dismissed the endorsements writing via his Twitter handle on Monday, February 4, said the PDP presidential candidate will fail during the elections, no matter whose endorsement he gets.
