Justice Kudirat Akano of the Osun state high court in Osogbo has sentenced the killers of the 400 level student of microbiology department, Osun State University, Timileyin Sonibare, to death.
The accused, who were arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy, murder and misconduct with the body of the deceased, were sentenced on Monday, February 4, The Sun reports.
Legit.ng gathers that the 400 level student was murdered on June 26, 2017, in Oke Baale area of Osogbo.
His head was said to have been severed and roasted after he was attacked with a pestle. The killers intended to use his head for ritual.
The accused are 19-year-old AbdulRafiu Zakariyahu, Yusuf Kareem, Ayuba Ibrahim, Isiaq Yusuf and AbdulKareem Adeoti.
The first accused, Zakariyahu, was said to have admitted in his confessional statement that he killed Timileyin, while the second and third accused were said to be complicit.
The judge sentenced the first, second and third accused to seven years imprisonment for conspiracy, two years for misconduct and also sentenced them to death for murder.
According to the judge, there was no cogent evidence before the court that the fourth and fifth accused -Yusuf and Adeoti, were involved in Sonibare's killing.
The fifth accused, Adeoti, was however, sentenced to two years imprisonment for aiding the escape of another accomplice, Yahya, who is currently on the run.
The court held: “He did not make effort to report to the police after five days he was aware of the killing. He assisted Yahya to escape."
The fourth accused was discharged because there was no evidence against him before the court.

Justice SP Gang handed down the sentence after finding Umaru guilty of killing his girlfriend, Charity Thomas, on January 23.
While delivering the judgment, Gang declared that Umaru “mercilessly took the life of Charity Thomas in cold blood” and had to face the full wrath of the law.

Gang declared: “This sentence is mandatory; the law states that any person convicted of murder shall be punished with death by hanging. The sentence of this court upon you is that you, Sunday Umaru, will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on your soul."
