Certain animals are fast diminishing from their natural habitats. To combat this, several environmentally conscious people are on the look out for those species that are critically endangered. A Nigerian lady took to sharing the story of how she was able to rescue a nearly extinct sea turtle from being eaten by Nigerians.
The lady whose name on Instagram is Doyinsola Ogunye took to defending a sea turtle who had come ashore from becoming meat for many. According to Doyin, an environmentalist and anti-poacher of sorts, the sea animal had only come to land to give birth.
She tried persuading the touts that were coming at the animal that it would be a violation of some unspoken natural law if they feasted on the turtle. Although they did not see reason with her, she pressed forward in her brave protection of the sea animal.
Eventually, when it seemed all her pleas to spare the pregnant endangered turtle seemed to fall on deaf ears, Doyin took to recording videos of the leather-back animal in Elegushi Beach where it was found and sharing it with the world on social media.
Her post caught the attention of many people, and even right on the virtual space, pleas to spare the animal were intensified by many Nigerians.
After about four hours of deliberation and negotiation, "Mother Turtle" was eventually permitted to go back to her natural habitat. As she was very heavy, several Nigerians helped drag her into the water where her home really lies.
Even more, several of the touts who had first battled with Doyin when she begged for the life of the sea turtle later decided to become anti-poachers. Evidently, they were inspired by the lady's vehement defence of the helpless animal.
See Doyin's testimony below:
"Yesterday was all sorts of amazing . I will like to say a big thank you to everyone raising awareness about this issue . We need to do more . It’s not just about rescuing one turtle, It’s about the several others that without enforcement will end up in a pot of soup!!!! All the men from the Ikate Elegushi Community who volunteered to save the #leatherbackturtle #Glory were compensated and are now part of our Anti Poachers team."
