ICE takes 21 Savage into custody, alleging the rapper is a UK national who overstayed his visa

- Reports reveal that the rapper is in ICE custody in Georgia and has been placed into removal proceedings before the federal immigration courts

Social media has been thrown into a frenzy after popular Atlanta rapper, 21 Savage, was arrested for "overstaying" in the US. What remains a shocker is that while everyone believed the rapper to be a citizen of the country, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has stated otherwise.

21 Savage whose given name is Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, was arrested at a traffic stop in Atlanta, along with three other people during which ICE discovered his immigration status. He was taken into custody by ICE who allege that the Atlanta rapper is a United Kingdom national who stayed in the US after his visa lapsed.

According to an ICE spokesperson who spoke with CNN: “His whole public persona is false. He actually came to the U.S. from the U.K. as a teen and overstayed his visa.”

Reports reveal that the rapper had received a one-year visa in July, 2005. If the timeline stated by immigration is correct, 21 Savage would have been 12 when he arrived in the United States.

The rapper’s lawyer, Dina LaPolt revealed to TMZ that they are working towards getting him out of detention, describing the allegations as a misunderstanding.

He said: “We are working diligently to get Mr. Abraham-Joseph out of detention while we work with authorities to clear up any misunderstanding. Mr. Abraham-Joseph is a role model to the young people in the country – especially in Atlanta, Georgia and is actively working in the community leading programs to help underprivileged youths in financial literacy.”
