War in Akwa Ibom as PDP sues IGP, APC over illegal intimidation

- The police IG, Adamu Abubakar, has been dragged to court by the PDP, for allegedly arresting and detaining its members

- The party also sued the APC in the state, alleging that it has synergised with the police to intimidate it members

- It also prayed that the court mandate the respondents to pay a sum of N100 million for obstructing its fundamental rights

With some days to the general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom state has dragged the inspector general of police, Muhammed Abubakar Adamu, to court following the alleged arrest and detention of its members.

Filing a suit against the IGP and the All Progressive Congress (APC) before the state high court in Uyo, the opposition party prayed for an order for the enforcement of their fundamental human rights to freedom of expression, movement, The Guardian reports.

The party, in a 23-paragraph affidavit, also prayed to the court to recognise its right to peaceful assembly and association and personal liberty.

It also added that the court should mandate the respondents to pay a sum of N100 million for obstructing its fundamental rights.

According to PDP, APC was using the IGP and the police commissioner in the state to instigate the illegal arrest and intimidation of its members, adding that such malicious move was geared towards disorganising the party and gain undue advantage in the coming elections.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that in what seemed to be a verbal attacks ahead of the February general election, Chief Great Ogboru, the governorship candidate of APC in Delta state, had alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party was on the move to rig the election.

Ogboru made this allegation on Wednesday, January 23, in Asaba and Issele-Uku, Oshimili south and Aniocha north local government areas during the flag off ceremony of his campaign.
