- INEC has been asked to ban the APC from participating in the Lagos state governorship election
- The state chapter of PDP accused the ruling party of recruiting thugs and notorious criminals into its fold as members
- According to the opposition party, the violent APC members boldly used dangerous weapons
Lagos state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday, January 31, called for a ban of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from participating in the forthcoming elections in the state for allegedly recruiting thugs and notorious criminals into its fold as members.
Chairman of the party, Adegbola Dominic, made the call while addressing the General Assembly of PDP, which took place at the party’s secretariat at Sogunle in Ikeja area of the state.
The members in attendance include former deputy national chairman of PDP, Olabode George, the party’s publicity secretary, Taofik Gani, among others.
“We state strongly that the APC, especially should be banned from participating in the forthcoming elections because of how the party has now militarised the polity.
“The recent undeniable assault, hardship foisted on Lagosians, following the so-called APC mega rally is still fresh on our minds. These violent APC members boldly used dangerous weapons like machetes, guns, knives freely even as the APC governor was present and reading his speech.
“Whilst many were injured, at least three persons have been announced dead from the APC fracas. Many innocent, non-partisan Lagosians also lost their valuables. Lagos was held hostage.
"We cannot over look this as we know that the APC has a violent group “Face of Lagos,” with daring and notorious killers prepared to silent the opposition in the state."
The PDP alleged that the APC is already planning attacks on its members, candidates and chieftains across the state.
“We have not and cannot forget the gruesome murder of our governorship candidate in 2007, Engr. Funsho Williams. We therefore call on INEC to activate its powers to disqualify the APC for this obvious, monumental electoral malpractice and violence."
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the Jimi Agbaje Campaign Organisation in Lagos condemned the destruction of its billboards and campaigns posters by suspected hoodlums in the state.
On this part, Jimi Agbaje, Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate in the state, described the occurrence as APC ill-motive to ensure that there is no level playing field, New Telegraph reports.
This is contained in a statement titled: “Unlawful removal of campaign posters, party signs and other materials from the 3rd Mainland Bridge.”
