Just in: I won’t support Buhari or Atiku - Soyinka

Nigeria's Nobel Laureate and foremost playwright, Wole Soyinka, reportedly says he will not support presidential candidates of either of the two major parties.

The Cable reports that he said this at an ongoing interactive session tagged citizen forum 2019.

“It is time for a totally new direction, and when an alternative emerges, we will give the candidate our backing,” he said.

President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former vice president Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are the two leading candidates.

Soyinka had earlier lambasted a former president of Nigeria over his endorsement of a presidential candidate of the former ruling party ahead of the next general elections.

He urged Nigerians to be wary of the former president who pretends to be the conscience of the nation.

He made the statement in Abuja on Wednesday, January 9, at a symposium on fake news organised by BBC News.

Reacting to Soyinka's statement, Coalition in Defence of Nigerian Democracy and Constitution (CDNDC), a pro-democracy group, asked the nobel laureate to stop supporting President Buhari and attacking former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

CDNDC implored Nigerians to be very careful of the nobel laureate while saying Soyinka had “sacrificed his hard-earned reputation and honour” in supporting Buhari.
