Following the recent reports of a teenage girl being given out in marriage to a much older man, social media has been buzzing with reactions as many people have expressed their concern over the issue.
A Facebook user Chibuzor Ikeh on Tuesday, January 29, shared several pictures and videos of an elderly man who got married to a 16-year-old girl in Anambra state. She described the man to be around 56-year-old. Ikeh added that the man is very rich while the family of the little girl is poor.
Following this, the families involved have continued to receive backlash on social media. A Facebook user who spoke with the brother of the groom, shared details of their conversation. According to the man, the girl is above 18 and not 16 like many people believe.
She, however, insisted on seeing the birth certificate to prove the girl is indeed old enough. See her post below:
Another Facebook user also reacted to the story condemning the marriage. Identified as Prince Gwamnishu Emefiele Harrison, he called on 30 Ozubulu indigene to join him in retrieving the young girl.
In his words: "Ndi Ozubulu, please get to inbox let's stop this madness. I have verified this story and is 100%. I need 30 Ozubulu indigene to indicate below. We will retrieve the girl back...#ChildMarriage. For every time you support or turn a blind eye to this modern day slavery, a dream is crushed and a life, more or less, destroyed "
This is not the first case of child marriages in Nigeria and sadly, it is not going to be the last.
Legit.ng earlier reported that a 70-year-old man identified as Alhaji Yakubu (Nafsi-Nafsi) married an underage girl in Lapai local government area of Niger state on December 10, 2018. A certain Facebook user in the name of Aliyu Umar shared the photos on his page and congratulated Alhaji Yakubu for successfully marrying the young girl who many are claiming is barely 15 years of age.
