- She had delivered her babies through Cesarean Section
A 29-year-old woman has sadly lost her life after delivering quintuplets in Asaba, Delta state. The woman identified as Chukwunonso Onyejekwe died due to complications after the delivery of her babies.
According to Vanguard, the woman's death was confirmed by the head of clinical services and training, Emmanuel Ezeunu, at the Federal Medical Centre in Asaba.
Ezunu had revealed that the woman died 15 hours after she delivered her quintuplets. Ezunu had also confirmed that she died due to acute respiratory failure after giving birth successfully through Cesarean Section.
The head of clinical services also explained that she was brought into the hospital as an un-booked patient. He said due to her emergency, she was taken into the theatre straight.
He said: "The woman in question was brought to the FMC, on the 28th of January 2019, un-booked; that is to say, she was not a registered patient here. Also, when she came, we noticed that her blood pressure was so high and the condition put her in a high risk for a normal delivery."
Ezunu also revealed that the 29-year-old had no idea she was carrying quintuplets. She had told them that her last scan showed that she was having triplets.

According to Ezunu, the babies were successfully delivered around 9pm on the day she was brought in.
He said: "We delivered the woman of a set of quintuplets, but moments after, she developed respiratory failure. We had to rush her to the Intensive Care Unit, ICU, where doctors and nurses battled unsuccessfully to stabilize her deteriorating condition. Unfortunately, the woman gave up at about noon the next day.”
Oyefara Babatunde, the head of department of obstetrics and gynecology, revealed that the babies were 31 weeks old when they were delivered. He also said she had suffered cardiac arrest twice after delivery.
Babatunde said: “After delivery, the woman developed a respiratory problem known as, PTE. It is a complication that has to do with difficulty in breathing. We tried to stabilise her and while we were battling with that she fell into cardiac arrest.
We were able to resuscitate her but moments later she fell into a second cardiac arrest. The complications were multiple; they were also occasioned by her high-risk quintuplet pregnancy. It is a condition of abnormal blood clot formed in the lower limbs and released massively into the lungs.
It is so unfortunate that the woman died because after the successful delivery of five babies, the whole hospital was jubilating. But our joy and jubilation was turned into sadness and cries. It is really a sad incident.
However, the five babies are currently under intensive care at the hospital and I can inform you that they are doing fine.”
