Breaking: Group storms Lagos Assembly, protests planned impeachment

- Following plans by Lagos lawmakers to impeach Governor Ambode, some protesters stormed the state House of Assembly

A group of protesters on Wednesday, January 30, stormed the Lagos state House of Assembly to protest against the planned impeachment of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

The protesters, according to a report in The Nation, were seen carrying banners bearing different inscriptions.

Legit.ng gathers that the state assembly had accused Ambode of alleged gross misconduct over the signing into law the 2019 budget.

It would be recalled that at a plenary on Monday, January 28, the lawmakers had given a seven-day ultimatum to the governor to answer queries over his failure to personally present the 2019 budget to the Lagos Assembly.

The lawmakers, it was gathered, also accused Governor Ambode of spending without the budget being appropriately approved by the Lagos House Assembly, prompting a threat from the state legislative arm.

But in reaction, the protesters marched to the assembly complex to register their solidarity for the governor.

They reportedly chanted in Yoruba, calling on the lawmakers to let Governor Ambode finish his tenure peacefully.

Among various inscriptions printed on the banners of the protesters were: 'No to impeachment,' 'Stop scaring investors and tourists from Lagos state,' 'We stand with Ambode,' 'Don't set Lagos ablaze,' among others.

Legit.ng had earlier reported that the members of Lagos state House of Assembly had moved against Governor Akinwunmi Ambode in an action that could lead to impeachment process.

The Lagos Assembly also summoned the governor to appear before it within one week over the 2019 budget, which had caused disagreement between the two arms of government.
