A Berlin-based watchdog, Transparency International (TI) on Tuesday, January 29, said the United States slid down the rankings of a global corruption index in 2018.
Legit.ng gathers that TI revealed that the United States lost four points to score 71 out of 100 on its 2018 Corruption Perceptions Index.
One hundred and eighty nations are ranked by TI according to their perceived level of public sector corruption, where a score of zero signifies very corrupt and 100 means very clean.
The TI annual report read: “The low score comes at a time when the US is experiencing threats to its system of checks and balances as well as an erosion of ethical norms at the highest levels of power."
TI's Zoe Reiter, acting representatives to the US, said: “The Trump presidency has illuminated the cracks in the US system for ensuring a government that is accountable to the public interest.
“But President Trump is a symptom rather than a cause; the issues were there before he took office. For example, the Office of Government Ethics simply doesn’t have the teeth to control for conflicts of interest at the highest levels."
Reacting to the 2018 report, TI’s managing director, Patricia Moreira, said: "With many democratic institutions under threat across the globe - often by leaders with authoritarian or populist tendencies - we need to do more to strengthen checks and balances and protect citizens’ rights.”
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that democrats in the United States took control of the House of Representatives in the mid-term elections, a development which appeared to be a blow to President Donald Trump.
Democrats in the United States took control of the House of Representatives for the first time in eight years. Their success will afford them the opportunity to thwart President Trump's agenda.
The spotlight in the mid-term elections was stolen by female candidates as a lot of them ran for office.

Twenty-nine year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, is projected to become the youngest ever congresswoman.
The democrats' success at the poll will afford them the opportunity to launch investigation into President Trump's administration and business affairs, from tax returns to potential conflicts of interest.
