We will do what is right, remain neutral during 2019 elections - Police assure Nigerians

- The Nigeria Police Force has assured Nigerians of safety in the coming elections

- The police said it is carrying out extensive training of its personnel in collaboration with NGOs, CSOs and other international bodies

- The Force has also promised to support INEC throughout the period

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has promised to be neutral and provide a safe environment for electorates during the forthcoming general election.

Police spokesperson, ACP Frank Mba, made this statement on a programme on Radio Nigeria called Police Dairy, while talking about police preparations for the 2019 general election.

Mba said: "We are very much ready to provide adequate security & safe environment for the 2019 general election & if the election was today, we are good to go. The IGP has had several meetings with critical stakeholders in the election, the INEC, CSOs. The Police is committed to this course.

"We are aware of our roles & responsibilities as lead agency in the electioneering process, we are committed, other security & safety agencies are well carried along,we will protect INEC staff, electorates& electoral materials. We will do what is right and support INEC adequately.

"At the end of the 2019 elections, we are assuring the citizens that the Nigeria Police Force will be the Police of the year. We will do everything humanly, operationally and administratively possible to ensure a hitch free election. We will be neutral and apolitical.

"If you see something capable of undermining or disrupting the electoral process, before or during the elections, please reach out to the Police. Parents and guidance, warn your children and wards. Let's not allow unscrupulous elements. Nigerians, don't sell your vote."

According to the police, it has diagnosed the entire electoral process and done security and threat assessment.

"We are carrying out extensive training of our personnel in collaboration with NGOs, CSOs &other Int'l bodies, we are committed to ensuring a secured environment.

"Corps members are key to the conduct of elections in the country, just like every INEC staff and ad-hoc staff, we will ensure adequate security of our corps members. They should go about their duties without any fear or apprehension.

"There will be adequate supervision of our men during the elections to ensure their actions & conducts remain within the bounds of the law & electoral act. They will observe &respect the fundamental human rights and code of conducts on election duty as stated by Police Service Com," Mba added.

Legit.ng earlier reported that INEC alleged that there are plots by politicians in Akwa Ibom state to write results of the polls, instead of canvassing for votes from the electorate.

The allegation was made by the state's resident electoral commissioner, Mike Igini, at a public briefing to preview the forthcoming elections in the state on Monday, January 28.
