- President Buhari asked Imo APC members to vote for candidates of their choice
- This counters the position of the APC national chairman, Oshiomhole, who had mandated the APC members to vote for Uzodinma, the party’s guber candidate
- The Imo APC members are polarized over whom to vote for between Uzodinma and Uche Nwosu who eventually emerged as another party’s guber candidate after losing the APC ticket
President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, January 29, addressed internal crisis rocking the Imo state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the emergence of its governorship candidate which led to the defection of Uche Nwosu, one of the governorship contenders.
Rather than endorsing the governorship candidate of the APC, Hope Uzodinma, or Nwosu who eventually emerged as the candidate of his new party, the Action Alliance (AA), President Buhari reportedly urged members of the APC to vote for any candidate of their choice, The Nation reports.
Governor Rochas Okorocha is supporting Nwosu, his former chief of staff and son-in-law, while the APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, backs Uzodinma, who emerged the APC candidate in a controversial primary.
The situation has left with the state chapter of the APC polarised on who to vote.
The Imo state chapter of AA has also endorsed President Buhari after the emergence of Nwosu and promised to secure one million votes for him.
However, President Buhari addressing the APC crowd at the Dan Anyiam Stadium during his campaign rally, reportedly countered Oshiomhole who had mandated APC members to vote for Uzodinma.
He said: “You can vote for whosoever you want, do not allow intra or inter-party affairs stop you from voting for the candidate of your choice”.
Oshiomhole had earlier reportedly boasted that the APC does not need the support of the AA to deliver President Buhari in the state.
He said: “Let me make it clear that the APC is not in alliance with any party, we have the power to deliver the president.
“You should vote for Uzodinma as our governorship candidate, don’t be deceived by anybody.”.
