The chairman of Ogin Waterside local government area of Ogun state, Femi Onanuga, has reportedly been sacked by four councillors; deepening the crisis in the state's chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Allied Peoples Movement (APM) respectively.
According to Punch, Onanuga was removed from office because he supported the APC's governorship candidate in the state, Dapo Abiodun.
Legit.ng gathers that Onanuga’s deputy and two other councillors suspected to be working for Abiodun were also sacked by the councillors.
Onanuga reportedly confirmed the development, stating that his crime was refusing to join forces with Governor Ibikunle Amosun and his supporters in what he termed as “anti-party activities”.
He said: “I was impeached in just 20 minutes. I don’t know what I did wrong.
“I refused to join the APM. I refused to be involved in anti-party activities; I told them that I was elected on the platform of the APC. I support President Muhammadu Buhari and other APC candidates.”
He continued: “A quorum could only be formed by five councillors but four out of six councillors suspended the other two and impeached me and my deputy.”
The state APC caretaker committee, however, decried the development, describing it as “illegal” and “tantamount to executive recklessness which would not be condoned”.
The publicity secretary of the committee, Tunde Oladunjoye, condemned the impeachment and alleged that the governor was planning to sack more public servants suspected to be supporting Abiodun.
He said: “The APC condemns in totality this intolerant, illegal and provocative act by Amosun in his desperate and greedy bid to continue to indirectly hold on to power in Ogun state even after leaving office.”
The state commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, Chief Jide Ojuko, however, said the government was not aware of Onanuga’s impeachment.
