Nigerians believe new SARS reform will make the Police Force better - Legit Poll

Nigerians have in recent months been crying out for a reform of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) over their alledged unchecked excesses.

There have been disturbing reports of the activities of SARS, with many claiming most officers of the squad are given to extortion and the gross abuse of people’s fundamental human rights.

Nigerians who have suffered at the hands of some overzealous officers of SARS have taken to popular social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook to express their ordeals with video and photo proofs to support how they have been maltreated in the hands of those that should protect them.

It is no wonder therefore that one of the reforms the new inspector general of police, Mohammed Adamu, made was the breaking up of SARS and assigning them to state commissioners of police.

In a poll conducted by Legit.ng on Facebook and Twitter, Nigerians were of the strong belief that the new reform by the IGP will make the police better.

Out of the 652 people who participated in the poll on Facebook, 71% believe that the reform will help re-position the force on a right path, while 29% do not trust in the power of the reform.

On Twitter, a total of 153 people engaged the poll with 52% believing that the new reform will bring about positive results, as 48% do not think it ever will.

SARS was created as a special division of the police force to independently combat cases of robbery. Though founded in 1992, SARS operation was mainly restricted to Lagos prior 2002.

The force would later begin nationwide operation as the need for an immediate response to robberies became necessary.
