Following the deaths of supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in campaign-related accidents in Jigawa and Sokoto states, the presidency has directed that structural integrity tests should be conducted on all platforms being used for the 2019 election campaigns of the party in the country.

Punch reports that the disclosure was made in a statement on Thursday, January 24, by the special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity, Garba Shehu.

Legit.ng notes that the statement read: "The test covers all erections and fabrications such as dais, tents, stages, including electrical and other equipment."

According to the presidency, Buhari mourned the dead and was pained by the injuries sustained by many others.

Four persons reportedly lost their lives in Jigawa state, while six others were said to have been injured in an accident involving supporters of the APC who were travelling to attend the campaign rally of the party.

According to report, two supporters of the APC died in a stampede in Sokoto during the presidential campaign rally on Wednesday, January 23.

The president was quoted as saying: “The death of any party supporter touches me because these were poor Nigerians who made sacrifices to make Nigeria a better country by identifying with my change agenda.

“I will never forget the sacrifices of these ordinary Nigerians who travelled long distances to attend my presidential campaign rallies.

“These ordinary Nigerians were the pillars of our democracy because without them, we, the politicians, become irrelevant.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the spokesperson for the APC presidential campaign council, Festus Keyamo, said Nigerians cannot afford to make Buhari lose the February 2019 election since he has delivered on his promises.

Keyamo spoke at the launch of APC’s ‘Next Level’ in Ghana, saying the administration of Buhari had beaten expectations.

Keyamo was quoted as saying the administration had awarded N58 billion contract for the dualisation of the Calabar-Itu road, as well as the rehabilitation of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
