Breaking: Senate adjourns till after presidential election

Ahead of the forthcoming general elections, the Nigerian Senate has suspended its plenary until after next month’s presidential elections.

The Senate according to the lawmakers, will resume on February 19.

“Dear distinguished colleagues, in view of the fact that it is after 2pm., we cannot proceed any further so we have to adjourn accordingly. The senate hereby adjourns to Tuesday, the 19th day of February, 2019 at 10am. prompt,” Ike Ekweremadu had said while announcing the adjournment.

Recall that the presidential and national assembly elections are slated for February 16.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the proposed second reading of the 2019 budget by members of the House of Representatives was postponed to Tuesday, January 29.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, declared that the House will sit to conclude work on the budget.

Adamu Chika, representing Shiroro/Rafi/Munya of Niger state and Ahman-Pategi representing Edu/Moro/Pategi federal constituency of Kwara state reacted to the postponement of the budget.

They described it as irreconcilable errors in the 2019 budget, making the house to direct the ministries to present an error-free document that could enable the lawmakers continue work on the document.

Speaker Yakubu Dogara while speaking at the House said: “We have to sit on Tuesday so that we can give the committees the time to ensure that these errors are corrected,” adding that “members who want to speak on the budget should put down their names.”
