Group calls for removal of Police Service Commission official

- A group known has indicted a senior official in the Police Service Commission

- The Nigerian United People Anti Corruption Network accused the official of making the anti-corruption fight of the Buhari administration hollow

- The group also called for the removal of the official with immediate effect

A group known as the Nigerian United People Anti Corruption Network (NUPACN) has called on the authorities within the civil service to remove with immediate effect, the permanent secretary of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Istifanus Musa.

The group made this known in a press statement sent to Legit.ng on Wednesday, January 23, signed by its leaders, Peter Washpam and Alhaji Tunde Morakinyo.

The NUPACN described the tenure of Musa as retrogressive for both the commission as well as the Nigerian Police Force.

The group also accused the official of making the anti-corruption fight of the Buhari administration hollow, calling for his removal with immediate effect.

Part of the statement read: “We, the NUPACN cannot sit and watch the serious anti corruption fight of the Buhari administration be made hollow by the activities of people like the permanent secretary of the Police Service Commission, Mr Istifanus Musa.

“Nigerians are we are sure up to date on the shameless promotion exercise of over 1500 police officers which did not meet the rudimentary standards of merit, but rather turned out to be one on the basis of who one knew and the amount of cash that one had to give.

“This exercise which has brought much shame to the average Nigerian as well as brought discord among the Nigerian Police Force where those who were meant for promotion where sadly sidestepped for sometimes junior officers, some of which were promoted twice in three months was supervised by the permanent secretary.

“Let us remind Nigerians that following the outcry that greeted the exercise, well meaning Nigerians, particularly members of the PSC, have sought to do the right thing by having the exercise reviewed, this sadly has however been frustrated by the same permanent secretary.

“Again, the same permanent secretary has been engaging in a number of sharp practices, such as the awarding of contracts, without due process, the disregard for civil service rules and procedure and the nepotistic use of his good office to favour his family members and friends.”

The group also called on the anti corruption agencies to make investigations into such weighty allegations and do justice to the Nigerian people.

“We also call on the Head of the Nigerian Civil Service to remove with immediate effect Mr. Istifanus from the Police Service Commission, this is to enable the commission to redee its image as an institution.

“We also call on the relevant anti-corruption bodies to do the needful in order to do justice to the Nigerian people,” the group stated.

Meanwhile, the PSC has said it would annually recruit at least 30,000 personnel into the country’s police force in order to address what it described as a noticeable shortfall of officers in the system.

The commissioner representing human rights, north central in the PSC, Rommy Mom, disclosed this in Makurdi during an interactive session with police personnel and officers in the zone recently.

The report quoted Mom as saying Nigeria is seriously under-policed with the country grappling with less than 350,000 officials.
