Modric, Mbappe, Djokovic others jostle for Sportsman of the Year for 2018

- The Laureus World Sports Awards is set to hold in Monaco, France in February

- The award rewards performances of athletes in 2018 for different categories

- The Sportsman of the Year award will be contested by Modric, Mbappe among others

Ballon d'Or winner Luka Modric will contest the Sportsman of the Year against Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappe at next month's Laureus World Sports Awards.

The Real Madrid midfielder won several awards in 2018 following his stellar performances, winning the Champions League and leading Croatia to the World Cup finals.

Also in contention for the prestigious award is world number one tennis star Novak Djokovic, Formula 1 champion, Lewis Hamilton and basketball star Lebron James.

The athlete nominated for the Breakthrough of the Year is Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas among others, while the Sportswoman of the Year will be contested by Simona Halep and Angelique Kerbe

In the category for Team of the Year, the France national team that won last summer's World Cup in Russia are favourites for the accolade.

Other nominees are European champions Real Madrid, NBA champions Golden State Warriors and European Ryder Cup golf team.

The Laureus World Sports Awards is set to hold on Monday, February 18, in Monaco, France.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Real Madrid star Luka Modric is now expected to end the year 2018 as one the most successful players after being named as the Croatian sportsman of the year.

The 33-year-old midfielder has been impressive this year for his club and country winning the Champions League title with Real Madrid.
