How to put stones on ankara with iron
Ironing is one of the most popular and easy ways to put stones on ankara fabrics. Many manufacturers of rhinestones produce them with an adhesive layer that needs to be heated to stick to a surface. Since ankara is a natural fabric made out of cotton, the glue will stick to its surface effectively, fixing the fake gems reliably. It’s very important because washing can take off some of the jewels easily if they are not fixed properly.

Iron-gluing of rhinestones to fabrics consists of several stages
- Preparation of the fabric
You need to prepare both the clothes and the stones. Wash the fabric carefully if it’s not new and has been worn already. Detergents will dissolve all bodily oils that can soak fibers of the fabric and prepare the surface for the glue. Also, it’s necessary to remove all dust particles and hairs from the surface. You can do it with the help of some adhesive tape by pressing the adhesive side gently to the surface of the fabric.
- Preparation of the pattern
If you want to create some certain pattern with the help of rhinestones, prepare its outline on the fabric. Use a special tailoring chalk for this purpose. Sometimes, if you want to accentuate some details of the existing pattern on the fabric, you won’t need any outlines. In this case, just place the stones where you want to have them.
Since ankara is quite thin, the adhesive substance can soak it through when hot. Insert a piece of paper under the fabric to prevent gluing of the fabric layers together. Place the paper under the fabric before you start to place the rhinestones.
- Gluing of the stones
Now, cover the pattern with another paper piece and turn on the iron. Choose a temperature for cotton items (as a rule, it’s marked on the iron with a symbol of cotton) and start to press the iron slowly onto the parts where the stones are under the top paper layer. It’s allowed and even necessary to press on the iron but be careful to avoid breaking of the stones. Keep the iron in one place for about 20 to 30 seconds. As a rule, it’s enough for the glue to start melting and get attached to the surface of the fabric.
There’s another technique how to stone ankara cloth with the help of an iron. You need to take the iron while it’s cool and fix it with its foot facing upwards. While it’s still cold, place the stones on the foot either in the shape of the pattern you want to create or just randomly. The stones should be placed the glued side up!
Then, you need to turn the iron on and let it heat up until you can see that the adhesive side of the stones starts to fuse and become sticky. Now, wrap your fingers with paper towels and carefully pick the stones one by one with the help of a needle, inserting it into the sticky layer.
Quickly turn the stones the glued side down right above the place where they are supposed to sit and press them to the fabric with a finger wrapped into a paper towel. It’s necessary to work quickly before the glue fuses out. One average iron foot can give room for about 100 stones at once but you need to handle the gluing process very quickly.
How to add stones to ankara with a soldering iron
To handle the process this way, you will need some non-toxic epoxy adhesive, a soldering iron and several toothpicks. If you have already chosen the places where the stones will sit, heat up the epoxy adhesive with the help of the soldering iron and start adding it to the flat sides of the stones. Then, accurately place them where you want.
You need to remember that this adhesive dries very quickly. If you occasionally drop a stone, it may stick to the fabric in a wrong place. You need to be extra accurate and quick when working with this adhesive substance.
Again, don’t forget to place a sheet of paper under the layer which is being decorated with stones. The fabric can get soaked and stick to underlying layers, so you need to protect your garment from this effect.
If you need to know how to glue stones to ankara – it’s simple, the same rule will work. You just need to choose a glue that will not damage the fabric. You also need the one that’s durable to washing and other mechanical influence. Such glues can be found in specialized stores, often the same ones which sell the fake gems.
How to sew stones to ankara
Some fake gems are simply sewed to the surface of the fabric. These ones are usually made out of plastic and they have two small holes on their sides. These holes are big enough to let a fine needle through and so you can easily to sew them to any place on your clothes. This is a big advantage of theirs because they can be put on and taken off any time you want.
Still, these stones are often made of plastic, which makes their appearance less shiny than glass ones, and thus plastic ones cannot be ironed. You can both sew them to the fabric or set them onto a glue but you can hardly place plastic stones onto the fabric with the help of an iron.
Some stones that are made for being sewn to the fabric are set into metal holders. In such a case, the holder has the holes, in which the needle with a thread is inserted. As a rule, such gems have a specific shape of the bottom, which reminds of a true gem bottom, and they shine like true gems.
How to choose proper gems
When choosing the stones in the shop, you need to remember that the bigger the stones, the more tasteless and flamboyant the decoration will look. Medium-sized ones look best of all. Bigger and smaller sizes are normally used to complete the look of the decoration and give it a finishing touch.
You should always purchase at least 10 stones more than you need for the pattern. It will be your storage in case some stones fall off or in case you will need more than you’ve expected. Since Ankara patterns are already bright and have prominent details, it may be a good idea to use only a few stones to place the necessary accents.
