- John Mikel Obi is on the verge of joining Middlesbrough in January

- But Mikel prefers to stay with his family who are based in England

Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi is currently undergoing medicals with Championship side Middlesbrough.

According to The Sun, the Nigerian international traveled from London to the north-east yesterday after agreeing personal terms with the club.

The 31-year-old who spent the past seasons in the Chinese Super League with Tianjin Teda is making a return back to England.

Serie A giants Roma and Bundesliga side Wolfsburg have made their interest known in the former Chelsea midfielder but Mikel prefers a return to England, to be with his wife and children.

Mikel be playing under the Tutelage of Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis as the River Side outfit are on course in gaining promotion into topflight action next season.

Boro are currently fifth on the Championship table with seven points off table toppers Leeds United.

Mikel won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2012, and added a Europa League winners' medal the following year. He has also won three FA Cups, a League Cup and Community Shield.

Meanwhile, had earlier reported that struggling Premier League side Crystal Palace have reportedly shown interest in signing Nigerian midfielder John Mikel Obi until the end of the season according to Independent quoting Itsroundanditswhite.
