The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Osun state has issued a stern warning to corps members participating in the 2019 general elections to remain apolitical and avoid desperate politicians.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Emmanuel Attah, the state coordinator of NYSC, gave the warning on Tuesday, January 22, during his sensitisation visit to local governments in the state.

Legit.ng gathers that the visit was to sensitise serving corps members on what is expected of them during the elections.

He said: “Corps members are not expected to fraternise with politicians or allow themselves to be used by politicians for their selfish aims and ambitions.

“The NYSC is apolitical. We do not belong to any political party, and so, corps members, as children of the scheme, are expected to be apolitical and neutral during elections.

“You (corps members) are to work with INEC as neutral agents to give credibility to the election, just like your predecessors have done in time past.

“You must uphold the standard of the scheme by diligently and credibly discharging the roles given to you during the elections, and must not hobnob with politicians or their agents. Ensure to protect your name, the name of your family and the NYSC.

“Remember, anybody caught being used by politicians to truncate or disrupt the credibility of the election would be dealt with according to the electoral Act and the law."

Attah also warned corps members going against the dress code of the NYSC, stating that the scheme would no longer take it lightly with them.

He warned that anyone caught violating the dress code would be severely dealt with.

Attah added: “Any corps member that goes against the dress code of the NYSC or bastardises it would be seriously dealt with.

"Corps members should remember that they signed undertakings to uphold the rules and regulations of the scheme; and dressing and dress code are part of it.

“Any corps member that does not dress properly or dresses in flagrant violation of the NYSC laws or rules and regulations, would be dealt with accordingly."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom state allegedly asked members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to help the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) win the 2019 general elections in the state.

Akwa Ibom governor made this appeal on Saturday, January 19, at a political rally in Obot Akara local government area of the state.

Emmanuel asked if there were NYSC members around and when they responded in the affirmative, he reportedly asked them to help the PDP win.

He reportedly said: “You are the ones that will do elections. You know how you do it! When you are doing it, remember PDP! When you are doing it, remember PDP-o!"
