- Chief Olusegun Obasanjo says even though Atiku Abubakar is not a saint, he remains a better alternative to Muhammadu Buhari
- Obasanjo, a former president, accuses the government of Buhari of being incompetent and condoning misconduct
- He alleges that the country's anti-corruption agencies are used to hound perceived enemies of the government
Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has continued with his state of the nation comments ahead of the 2019 presidential election as he has now compared Muhammadu Buhari and Atiku Abubakar, the two major contenders for the position.
Obasanjo said even though Atiku, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is not a saint, he remains a better choice than Buhari, the current occupier of the seat and flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obasanjo alleged that Buhari is incompetent and condones misconduct and as a result, does not merit re-election.
Buhari, who spoke with the Pidgin version of the BBC, on Tuesday, January 22, said Atiku, his former deputy, is a better choice than Buhari.
He said in Pidgin English: “Atiku is not a messiah, he's not a saint; and fortunately, he's not claimed to be. He's not claimed a fake sanctimoniousness. He came here, acknowledged and showed remorse.
“He acknowledged his past misdeed and showed remorse and all the things I've said about him still remains. I said them and nobody has come to controvert them but I am a believer and a Christian as such, and the teaching of God in my own religion is forgive so that you can be forgiven.
“The choice that we have for the immediate Nigerian situation today is between the candidate of APC and PDP.
“From what I know of Buhari and what he has done and shown - his utter incompetence, nepotism and condonation of evil and misconduct, including corruption, the weakness of the body, mind and totality of Buhari compared with Atiku, I believe Atiku will perform two times better than Buhari.”
Obasanjo also came hard on the nation’s anti-graft campaign of the government as, according to him, it is more of propaganda while they are used to hound perceived enemies.
“You can steal the whole of Nigeria, and if you belong to APC, you're safe; but you can steal N10, if you criticise Buhari and his government, even when you stole that N10 15 years ago, they'll come and ask for the N10.

“All these institutions that are meant for the running of good governance, of making Nigeria wholesome, are being abused and misused just to perpetuate Buhari in government. That cannot be the way to go,” he said.
Legit.ng earlier reported that President Muhammadu Buhari presided over the National Council of State meeting, which began at 11am inside the Council Chambers of the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday, January 22, with Olusegun Obasanjo in attendance.
